Chapter 12

BRYAN WAS giddy with excitement as he climbed into the car with Greg. It had taken another two hours after the match concluded for them to finally make their way off the court and into the locker room. First, there had been the awards presentation, then Greg had to pose for photos. People kept coming up to congratulate him, and he took time to greet each one. Bryan waited patiently, even after Trevor and Adam departed.

“You were amazing,” Bryan said as he slid into the passenger seat.

Greg, who was now freshly showered and changed, smiled at him warmly. “Thanks. I’m so stoked right now!” He grabbed hold of Bryan by the shoulders and pulled him in for a kiss, deep and passionate.

“Mm. Do you have any idea how sexy you were out there on the court?”

Greg laughed. “I was a big ball of nasty, stinky sweat… kind of the opposite of sexy.”

“I dunno. I think you looked hot. I don’t mind your mansweat.”

“Well, we both had good days, and you’re looking pretty damn sexy yourself right now.”

Bryan was flattered and leaned in to kiss him again, but only briefly. “I was thinking about that,” he said, “and I wonder, what exactly is it about me that a guy like you even finds attractive?”

“Please don’t do that,” Greg said. His voice contained no venom, only warmth and sincerity. “I know it’s not your fault, but it hurts me.”

Confused, Bryan pulled back. “What do you mean?”

“When you put yourself down.”

“But I didn’t. I just asked….”

“Bryan, I could list a dozen or more things about you that I think are amazing. And you know what? I will. I’ll do exactly that. I’ll tell you every day how gorgeous you are, how intelligent and witty and charming, how your heart of gold is so touching to me. I’ll tell you all those things because they’re true. But I wish you could get to a point where you can start telling them to yourself.”

“I didn’t mean….”

“I know you weren’t fishing for compliments. Believe me, I get it. I understand that you have insecurities, that you doubt yourself constantly. If only you could see yourself the way I do, you’d realize how lovable you are. Bryan, this is the first time since I was fourteen that anyone has shown up to root for me at a tournament.”

Bryan felt like such a loser at that moment. He’d somehow managed to make the conversation about himself when they should have been celebrating Greg’s big victory. “I’m sorry,” he whispered. “You’re so popular, though. I thought you’d have a zillion people there cheering for you.”

“Oh, I do. I do have fans and supporters, and that’s not what I mean. I mean someone special. Family. Loved ones.”

Bryan again wondered why this was the case. Greg had said his mom was loving and supportive, so why wasn’t she there? “What about your mom?”

Greg fastened his seat belt and engaged the ignition. “Um, well, can I explain all that when we get back to my place? How ’bout we pick up some takeout? I’m about starving right now.
